Tillamook, with a population of almost 5,000, is a city and county seat in Tillamook County, in Oregon. It gets its name from the Salishan speaking Native American people called the Tillamook who inhabited the region in the early part of the 19th century. The Tillamook County Fair has a rich history dating back more than 100 years, although it moved to its present site, a 90 acre site donated by R C Magarelle and the Williams family, in 1921. An extensive building programme took place over the next 6 years, resulting in a Grandstand, Dance Hall and other outbuildings being added to the site. The Fair celebrates the cultural and agricultural heritage of the city and surrounding regions, and also stages 4 days of racing which includes both quarter horse and thoroughbred racing over its 4 furlong oval track complete with separate 5 furlong chute for sprint races. The principal race is the Don Jenck Memorial. |
